Mekong delta canal Vietnam tour

Vietnam: Bến Tre canal boat ride, Tien River (part of Mekong Delta tour)

Date: 25 October 2019

After the first stop to Vinh Trang pagoda, we were back on the highway en route to the next stop on my Mekong Delta tour.

Rice fields south Vietnam
We drove past many rice fields. Vietnam is third largest rice exporter in the world behind Thailand. India is still no. 1.

Our van parked by a dock at Tiền River in Bến Tre province.

Our guide would continue her talk on the boat
Tien river cruise boat Vietnam
There are cruise boat river tours here too

There are many small islands along Tien river and the Mekong. The boat we were on dropped us off at one such island in the Ben Tre province where my tour group would then be guided to a restaurant-like area.

This was my boat’s stop
Honey tea snacks Mekong delta tour
My group were seated on a table and served honey tea along with a variety of sweet snacks
Lotus seeds banana sweet Vietnam
We were served a sampling of sweet banana chips, sweetened lotus seeds and… something else (I forgot)

Honestly, this was just a stop on the “tour” where the guys who run this place could use to promote and sell us a bunch of locally made products.

Lotus seeds Mut Sen Vietnam
But I fell for it and bought a pack of candied lotus seeds to take back to India

The staff here would also pitch us natural skin creams

After the snack break, we moved on

At this spot a lady was offering photo opportunities with this massive python
Mithun snake around neck Vietnam
I hate snakes but since it didn’t cost me anything, I thought “what the heck” and just posed. The snake felt cold!

We moved on to the next activity on the tour, a boat ride through a small canal.

Tien river canal row boat
This is what I was looking forward to the most on this tour!

A friend of mine who had done this tour told me water levels can drop and it would get muddy but I was glad there was enough water for the boats to float through.

My tour group were separated into smaller groups of 3 and 4 people per boat
Mithun Vietnamese hat
We were all given Vietnamese hats (which we had to return at the end of the boat ride)

It was very relaxing to be cruising gently past all these Nipa palm trees

Nipa palm trees (or Dua Noc in Vietnamese) are a type of mangrove palms. The nipa palm is slightly saltwater tolerant and so it grows in these waters. They are common across South East Asia, India and China too but I haven’t seen it along the river canals of Kerala.

Even though this ride was less than 10 minutes long, I really enjoyed it.

I took more videos than photos so please watch the video at the end of this blog to enjoy the sights and sounds of this canal boat ride.

From here, we would get back on our boat and resume our tour. That would be the final post from this day tour of the Mekong Delta.
