Vietnam: Mui Ne Sand Dunes Sunrise Tour – visit to Bao Trang desert (White Sand)

Date: 29 October 2019

After arriving in Mui Ne yesterday and making the most of the day by visiting the Champa temple complex, I woke up very early in the morning for my tour of Mui Ne’s famous white and red sand dunes. I booked my tour locally for VND 300,0000 (₹950/$13/€10) but you have plenty of options from online platforms like Viator. Most tourists do the sunrise tour but you also have sunset tours.

Mui Ne early morning drive
I was picked up at 4:30am from my hotel and the SUV that picked us up, would go around picking up the other guests

We filled up fuel first before heading out to the sands

We were supposed to be at the white sands for the sunrise… but I could see the sun already creeping up in the distance

It took about 45 minutes to reach Bao Trang desert, which is the white sand dunes

Once we arrived at the White Sands parking area, each of us were divided individually and seated on ATV quad bikes.

This is an ATV (all terrain vehicle), if you didn’t know what that meant

The ATVs would take us to the top of the dunes

It’s pretty hard to believe but Mui Ne makes Vietnam among the only two countries in South East Asia with desert sand dunes. The other is the Paoay Sand Dunes in Ilocos Norte province, in the Philippines.

I didn’t take too many photos (took more videos) while on the ATV but do watch my vlog for video clips, which you can see below.

Once we were dropped off at the peak of the highest dune, I immediately set up my camera to shoot a time lapse video

We were only given around 15 to 20 minutes on top of the highest sand dune so I didn’t get a whole lot of time to shoot but here’s a snippet of the sunrise:

While everyone was busy taking selfies and portraits for Instagram, this is what my camera was busy with

Bao Trang desert is quite vast

Eventually I had to pack up and head back to my ride

So when you arrive at Bao Trang, you have the option to visit the lakeside, for which you have to pay extra. I figured I would’nt be coming back here anytime soon so I decided to pay and just check it out.

I look at this and still can’t believe I’m not in the Middle East

So was paying extra to go to the lake side worth it?

Hmm, not really

Here’s a video clip:

Since I paid for it, I can tell you… it’s not really worth it unless you really want some footage that’s a bit different from the sand dunes

I still made the most of it and shot some videos that you can watch in my vlog below.

Once I re-grouped with the rest of my tour group, we left the white sands

Now that the sun was up, we next drove towards the red sand dunes which is a bit further away from the white sands. That will be the next post.
