Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City’s Book Street, Opera House

Date: 27 October 2019

I was continuing my sightseeing around Ho Chi Minh City after stopping by the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica and Ho Chi Minh City Central Post Office. Right beside the Post Office building is Ho Chi Minh City’s Book Street (Đường sách Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh).

It was just a few steps away from the Saigon Central Post Office
Ho Chi Minh City book street
It’s famous for being a trendy spot lined with book stores and cafes

The book street isn’t very big, just a 100 metres long

Some book stores seem to be operated by publishers themselves

I didn’t see as many people inside the book stores buying books
Saigon girls book street Vietnam
Saw a lot of girls posing for the Gram though (translation: posing for photos to later upload to Instagram)

Lined with trees giving the street a natural shade, visitors can sit and take respite from the heat

Although I do read a lot, I’m not really into books (I mostly read online news and articles)

I continued my walk around District 1

This is the Deutsches Haus

It houses the German Consulate General and showrooms for German companies (like Leica) among other tenants, including Adidas’ Vietnam office

I followed the directions in Google Maps to find my way to the Opera House.

To the left is Caravelle Hotel and Park Hyatt Saigon is on the right — both are 5 star hotels near the Opera House
Saigon Opera House Vietnam
The Opera House is another building from the French colonial era

Called Opėra de Saigon in French, it was first built in 1897. The Opera House accommodates 500 seats and was used as the home of the Lower House assembly of South Vietnam after 1956. It was restored as a theatre again in 1975 and later renovated in 1995.

Unfortunately I could not enter as there was a musical event by the city’s various international schools being held inside

Right in front of the Opera House is a construction of a metro station.
Vietnam Japan Saigon metro construction
Japan is helping fund and overseeing construction of Ho Chi Minh City’s underground metro and I guess the Opera House will be one of the stations

There wasn’t much to do around the Opera House so I continued my walk around the city. More in the next post!
